It’s been really interesting to see the reactions to discussions about the ‘character concerns’ with three of our newly-drafted players. For a distinct subset of our community, the issues with these players are non-starters. They don’t see anything wrong with smoking marijuana, and they think the NCAA rules are stupid. The people who feel this way apparently haven’t noticed a critical point, though—the Steelers organization consider them to be a problem. One member of this subset is SteelCityRoller. Pittsburgh Steelers WR Mike Wallace has little leverage left in his contract negotiation. Not only is teammate, WR Antonio Brown, rising fast among other NFL wide receivers, but he's taking some of the spotlight from Wallace. Two dogs, one bone. Or, two great receivers, one big Steelers pay day. Does Wallace's alleged threats to hold out matter? No. The Steelers have the ability to reduce his $2.7 million tender offer to 110 percent of his 2011 salary (much less than $2.7 million) if Wallace does not sign the deal by June 15, one day after mini-camp ends. Maybe this is Clintonion, but it…

For those of us who have been hoping for this day to come, rejoice because it is here. In a discussion with WDVE's Mike Prisuta, Colon confirmed that he will indeed move to left guard in order to make room for Mike Adams to start on the offensive line. ESPN speculates here that the new offensive line will look, from left to right like this: Adams T Colon G Pouncey C DeCastro G Gilbert T In my humble opinion, the guard position is the best fit for Colon and the team at this point, and significantly improves the OL, assuming Adams is ready to take over at LT.

He was in on 100 tackles total with 71 credited to him as being of the solo variety, where he was the primary, or in some cases, the only player involved in making the stop. Both of those numbers were career highs for Clark, but that is not necessarily such a good thing though. • The Pittsburgh Steelers sign WR Marquis Maze

    admin
    3 May 2012 | 8:51 pm
The Steelers have signed undrafted rookie WR Marquis Maze out of Alabama.  Maze is on the small side at 5’8″, 192 pounds and he runs a 4.5 40.  Maze is very quick on the field and he has a wide array of moves to help him get open and get extra yards after the catch.  But, he’s not much of a help when asked to block on a running play.  Maze played in 13 games (12 starts) for Alabama last year and he caught 56 passes for 627 yards (11.2 avg) with 1 TD grab.  He played in 54 games (35 starts) in his four years with the Crimson Tide and he caught 136 passes for 1,844 yards…

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected OG Kelvin Beachum out of SMU with the 248th overall pick (7th round) of the 2012 NFL Draft.  Beachum is a big guy at 6’2″, 303 pounds.  He flashes as nasty streak in the running game but he has had issues with pass blocking, especially against speed rushers.  That is why Beachum projects more at a guard than a tackle at the Pro level.  He played in 11 games (all starts) for SMU last year.  He played in 52 games (all starts) for SMU and he played left tackle for all of those contests.  I like this pick for the Steelers as they need help at…

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected CB Terrence Frederick out of Texas A&M with the 246th overall pick (7th round) of the 2012 NFL Draft.  Frederick is thin at 5’10″, 180 pounds and he only runs a 4.55 40.  Due to his lack of speed, he’s likely going to need safety help over the top when the Steelers are not in a zone defense.  He played in 13 games (all starts) at Texas A&M last year and he had 57 tackles, 13 passes broken up, 1 interception, 9 tackles for a loss and 4 sacks.  Frederick played in 50 games (45 starts) in his four years with the Aggies and he had 208…

  • My Thoughts on Ben Roethlisberger and Santonio Holmes

    Pat
    15 Apr 2010 | 10:28 am
It sure has been a busy week for Steeler Nation and not because the NFL draft is quickly approaching. It’s not even because of free agency moves made by the organization. The Steelers have been experiencing some unusual off-season publicity. I’ll start by talking about the problems with Santonio Holmes. Holmes was traded to the [...]

What a difference a year makes. Last year at this time we didn’t have to worry about other teams winning, other teams losing and all these “if” so and so wins, so and so loses, etc… We were in and I was confident we would make it through the playoffs and to the Super Bowl. [...]

  • Up Close with Steelers David DeCastro

    Jim McMillen
    11 May 2012 | 3:40 pm
By Kenneth Torgent It may have been late April, but it seemed like Christmas morning in the Steelers war room on the first day of the 2012 NFL Draft. Stanford guard David DeCastro, the best interior lineman in the draft and a player that most expected to go in the top-fifteen, slid all the way down to the 24th overall pick and right into the lap of the Pittsburgh Steelers. The rugged and athletic offensive lineman is expected to compete for the starting spot at right guard immediately. PSR’s Ken Torgent and Steve Flinn were there when DeCastro met with Pittsburgh media for the first…
  • No-Huddle Offense Plays to Big Ben’s Strength

    Jim McMillen
    11 May 2012 | 6:32 am
There was some apprehension from Ben Roethlisberger when the Pittsburgh Steelers did not retain offensive coordinator Bruce Arians. Any concern should be out the window now, as Roethlisberger is learning the direction of new offensive coordinator Todd Haley’s offense. The sportsbook review on one of Haley’s strengths as a coordinator is designing an offense that plays to his players’ strengths. One of Roethlisberger’s biggest strengths is his ability to run the no-huddle offense and, according to Roethlisberger, via Pro Football Talk, that appears to be a focal point…
  • Mike Adams Officially Signs Contract

    Jim McMillen
    11 May 2012 | 6:19 am
Former Ohio State offensive lineman Mike Adams signed a four-year, $3.9 million contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, according to The Columbus Dispatch. Adams was an All-Big Ten selection as a junior in 2010, and made the conference’s second-team honors last year in spite of his five-game suspension for violating NCAA rules. Although his draft stock collapsed after testing positive for marijuana at the NFL scouting combine, Adams was still taken in the second round (56th overall) and could immediately contend for the starting job at left tackle with Max Starks yet to be…
  • AFC North Report: Browns Take the Leap Edition

    Jim McMillen
    10 May 2012 | 6:34 am
The pressure is mounting on Browns president Mike Holmgren and the rest of his regime after producing nine wins in two years in Cleveland.   The Browns addressed the NFL’s 10th-ranked defense with a couple of free-agent additions and made sweeping changes to their lackluster offense by drafting a new quarterback (Brandon Weeden), running back (Trent Richardson) and right tackle (Mitchell Schwartz).    Another four- or five-win season isn’t going to cut it for the Browns in 2012. “I would not be particularly happy if we had the same record or close to it,” Holmgren…
  • Roethlisberger suspects 49ers targeted him

    Jim McMillen
    10 May 2012 | 6:29 am
Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger stopped far short of accusing the 49ers of wrongdoing, but intimated Wednesday he suspected his bum ankle was being targeted during a game last season at Candlestick Park. The topic turned to the New Orleans Saints’ bounty scandal on The Dan Patrick Show when Roethlisberger made passing reference to the 49ers’ 20-3 victory over the Steelers on Monday, Dec. 19. After that game, Roethlisberger called himself “the 49ers’ best player.” He threw three interceptions, was sacked three times and fumbled twice. “Sometimes…

  • Video: A behind the scenes look into Antonio Brown's workouts

    6 May 2012 | 1:02 pm
-B- Antonio Brown's rise to stardom last year may have seemed like it came out of nowhere, but as the saying goes -- overnight success takes 10 years. Brown is one of the hardest workers in the NFL and much has been written of his offseason workouts with Chad Ochocinco and others. Brown's at it again this offseason and The NOC followed him around Pittsburgh for a day, filming Brown's commute and training at the Steelers south side facilities. I always love this kind of behind the scenes videos, but this is really well put together and an awesome glimpse into the day-to-day life of the…
  • Steelers already the hottest ticket for 2012 season

    1 May 2012 | 5:43 pm
Although it seems like just a few weeks ago that Eli Manning and the Giants hoisted another Lombardi trophy at the conclusion of the 2011-12 NFL season, tomorrow marks the first of May.  With another NFL draft weekend behind us--and OTAs & Rookie Minicamps just around the corner--now its time to look ahead to the 2012-13 season.  Our partners at TiqIQ have done the same and they've put together this graphic highlighting the most in-demand tickets--by week--for the upcoming season.  After another stellar draft, the Steelers look poised to compete for the AFC North title…
  • Florida RB Chris Rainey drafted by Steelers in 5th Round

    28 Apr 2012 | 1:59 pm
The Steelers selected Florida running back Chris Rainey in Round 5 of the 2012 draft with the 159th overall pick. Rainey is an entirely different running back from Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman: he's only 5-foot-8, 180 pounds and is likely to have more of an impact on special teams and in the receiving game than he will taking handoffs out of the backfield. He led Florida in both rushing yards and receptions last season. He's got blazing speed, running a 4.45 at the combine. But the lack of strength is definitely concerning. Rainey has drawn a lot of comparisons…
  • Steelers choose Alameda Ta'amu in 4th round

    28 Apr 2012 | 12:42 pm
After many experts forecasted the Steelers going after a nose tackle early in the 2012 draft, the Steelers waited until the 4th round to select a defensive lineman, choosing Washington's Alameda Ta'amu. He's 6'3", 330 pounds and projects to be a massive, run stopping nose tackle a la Casey Hampton. The Steelers actually traded up 10 spots to get Ta'amu, which speaks to how highly they thought of him. Pittsburgh swapped 4th round picks with Washington, giving them a 6th round pick as well. Ta'Amu had 30 tackles and four sacks during his senior year with the Huskies and was an…
  • Steelers pick Ohio State's Mike Adams in 2nd round of 2012 NFL Draft

    27 Apr 2012 | 7:17 pm
As favorable as the situation was that the Steelers found themselves in during last night's first round, the war room had to be feeling even better tonight when two highly rated offensive tackles were still on the board when the Steelers made the 56th pick of the 2012 NFL Draft. The Steelers choose Ohio State's Mike Adams over Mississippie State's Bobby Massie and made another huge move to continue to rebuild their offensive line. Adams has the skills and frame to be a franchise-type LT. He's 6'7", 323 pounds and anchored Ohio State's offensive line throughout his career. He comes with some…

I doubt he ends up with this number."Character Issues" or "Off-field Issues" abound with this group. A closer look shows a series of conditions that at worst should serve as an area of concern, but at best could have given The Steelers an oppurtunity to get discounted merchandise. Sortof like shoppin at Gabe's. • The Bubble Screen of Death is Dead

    20 Jan 2012 | 11:55 am
Presumably, at least. How knows if the Steelers will double down on pass happiness and sign Mike Martz just to see how high I'm willing to climb to leap to my demise. Even worse, some are saying Jim Caldwell is a possible replacement candidate. What conversationsFor now, let's just celebrate Bruce Arians being gone forever. Granted, he wasn't the worst offensive coordinator the team has ever had in my lifetime (Kevin Gilbride), but the Steelers could certainly do better. I'm sure the guy got tired of the constant hate and blame heaped on him (hate and blame I was only happy to contribute) and…
  • Tebow 3:16 Means You Just Got Sideline Smolderfaced

    9 Jan 2012 | 1:20 pm
Fuck.Fuuuuuuuuucccccccckkkkkkkk.It's been readily apparent for weeks that the Steelers were too banged up and otherwise out of sorts to put together another bid for the Super Bowl. Most likely they were going to lose to New England in six days in Foxboro, but they should have enough - even with half the defense sidelined or compromised - to down a 8-8 team, even on the road. The Steelers might have (could argue they should have) pulled it out, but poor coaching and, more importantly, a lack of adjustments kept them from advancing. Moreover, the Steelers just became evidence for the many…

  • Steelers Go Before God Boy

    6 Jan 2012 | 7:54 am
Unless the Steelers overcome injuries to pull another 2005-esque three-win playoff run on the road, the team is going to end up having its season come to close with a loss to either Tebow, the Patriots or Baltimore. None of those is particularly pleasant to contemplate. Being myth building fodder for the Tebow media machine might not be quite as bad as conceding a first playoff loss to the Ravens, but it's not far off.The hype behind Timmy has fallen off slightly given Denver's implosion the final month of the season. That should help allay fears that the Steelers won't suffer a crushing…

  • Terrell Suggs’ injury might help Steelers

    3 May 2012 | 1:37 pm
For those of you who haven’t heard yet, Baltimore Ravens’ linebacker Terrell Thuggs…..errrrr, I mean “Suggs”, tore his Achilles tendon.  The team doesn’t have confirmation on exactly how bad the injury is.   They are awaiting news from doctors. I would never celebrate a player getting injured.  That would be a crass and classless move.  But I must mention that Suggs’ injury may actually be a good thing for the Steelers. Suggs is the reigning NFL Defensive Player Of The Year, and has been a constant thorn in the sides of the Steelers.  Despite…
  • Steelers mock draft contest winner

    2 May 2012 | 11:08 pm
This year, we held our inaugural Steelers Mock Draft Contest. We got dozens of entries, and lots of variation in how fans thought the draft would play out. There were a few consistencies in the picks that people made.  For example, one thing that was very consistent was that most of you thought that the Steelers were going to take Dont’a Hightower, the inside linebacker from Alabama.  Of course we now know that Hightower ended up going to the New England Patriots one pick after the Steelers selected David DeCastro. Another thing that was pretty consistent was that most of you…
  • Rating the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2012 draft

    30 Apr 2012 | 10:32 am
Now that the dust has settled, and we’ve all had a chance to think about what the Pittsburgh Steelers did in the 2012 NFL Draft, it’s time to evaluate how they did. In order to properly evaluate the Steelers’ performance in the draft, we have to first look at what they needed going into the draft.  We ranked the Steelers’ team needs here. As you see, we said that the Steelers’ top need was at guard.  And with their first pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, they selected the best guard in this year’s draft class.  In fact, some have said that David DeCastro is…
  • Steelers select OT Kelvin Beachum in 7th round

    Admin
    28 Apr 2012 | 9:46 pm
With their final pick in the 7th round (they had 4 of them), the Steelers selected Kelvin Beachum, an offensive tackle from SMU. Kelvin Beachum was a 4-year starter at SMU.  He started all 4 years at left tackle. What’s particularly impressive is that Beachum was able to start as a freshman at a position that is as important as left tackle. What makes his accomplishment even more impressive is that SMU was a pass-oriented offense.  So the tackle position was critical to their success. Beachum was recognized for his performance by being named First Team Conference USA as a senior.
  • Steelers select CB Terrence Frederick in 7th round

    Admin
    28 Apr 2012 | 8:43 pm
With the 246th pick of the 2012 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Texas A&M cornerback Terrence Frederick. Frederick is 5′ 10.5″, 180 lbs., which is small for an NFL player, but not overly small for a cornerback.  Unfortunately, Frederick doesn’t bring any other remarkable traits to complement his non-remarkable size. He’s not an exceptional cover corner.  He doesn’t have top end speed, and has a tendency to bite on fakes.  In fact, he’s probably best utilized in a zone defense. He’s not a big hitter.  But at 180 lbs., I don’t…

Yes, in the immortal words of Bob Dylan; "The times they are a-changin' " actually apply to today's version of the NFL. ufiygf.jpgThe league, and sport as we know it absolutely MUST make some changes in order to protect itself for the future. The commish, Mr. Roger Goodell has now been tasked with saving the league for future generations to come. Unfortunately all that is heard is "how bad" of a job he's doing, or that "he is ruining football" as we know it. It's well past time that knuckleheads making these comments shut up and realize what is happening. Yes, he is not doing most things…
  • Opinion: The NFL Needs A D-League

    ManO'Steel
    13 May 2012 | 12:42 pm
In an interview with Roger Goodell a couple of months back, he stated that the league is considering adding 2 teams to the league, including a team in Los Angeles. I think that if the league ever wants to consider adding to expansion teams [which starts off with the Expansion Draft], the league would have to make a developmental league, the NFL D-League. Whether or not they add 2 teams, this is still a great idea. It would be a major upgrade from the practice squad, and would be the perfect place for that linebacker that you draft and want him to start, but don't think he is ready for the NFL…

Diploma in hand, Steelers' Roethlisberger tackles new playbook May 9, 2012 9:33 pm By Ed Bouchette Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Hitting the books at age 30 has produced two tangible items for Ben Roethlisberger these days, one a college degree, the other a headache. He earned a degree in education from Miami University Sunday by completing course work left languishing for nearly eight years while he pursued a career in professional football. He earned a post-graduate headache going over the course work of professor Todd Haley, who introduced his new playbook to the Steelers offense after the…
